“Saving humanity from homosexual or transexual behavior is just as important as saving the rainforest from destruction” The Irish Times reported Pope Benedict XVI as saying during his end-of-year address on Monday to the Curia, the Vatican’s central administration.

The BBC said the Pope also criticized gender theory, as it “blurred the distinction between male and female and could thus lead to the ‘self-destruction’ of the human race.”

Homosexual groups in Italy responded by saying the Pope’s speech was an attack on homosexuality and transsexuals, reported The Guardian.

Homosexual and feminist bloggers quickly responded and criticized the Pope’s statements. One blogger stated he was angry that the Pope sees homosexuality as a “threat” to humanity and questions how the Pope plans to fight sexuality.

Feminist blogger, Jennifer Ruth, commented on the F-Word’s blog that the Pope’s statements are flawed. She notes that the Catholic Church sees homosexuality as unacceptable because they cannot pro-create; yet the teachings do not address heterosexual couples who decide not to have children.
